Brent was founded in 1898 along the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad line in the southern portion of Bibb County. The community was incorporated in 1913. On May 27, 1973, Brent was almost completely destroyed by an F4 tornado during an outbreak of violent weather in the Deep South. The tornado was on the ground for 139 miles (224 km), currently the longest track to date in Alabama history. Brent was able to be rebuilt before being hit by another EF3 on March 25, 2021, also damaging the adjacent town of Centreville. At the 2020 census, the population was 2,972. The city is governed via the mayor-council system. The entire city council consists of five members elected from single districts. The mayor is currently Bobbie White, who is elected by the entire council. Brent is located near the center of BibB County at 32°56'24.864" North, 87°10'29.935" West (32.940240, -87.174982). It lies in the Cahaba River valley and is adjacent to Centreville, the county seat. U.S. Route 82 passes through the northern part of town, bypassing the town center, and leads northwest 32 miles (51 km) to Tuscaloosa and southeast 73 miles (117km) to Montgomery, the state capital. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Brent has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.
History
Brent was founded in 1898 along the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad line in the southern portion of Bibb County. The community was incorporated in 1913. On May 27, 1973, Brent was almost completely destroyed by an F4 tornado during an outbreak of violent weather in the Deep South. The tornado was on the ground for 139 miles (224 km), currently the longest track to date in Alabama history. Brent was able to be rebuilt before being hit by another EF3 on March 25, 2021, also damaging the adjacent town of Centreville were the airport was to have the airport a total loss. The town of Brent has a population of about 2,000. Brent is located on the Gulf of Mexico and the Alabama-Mississippi state line. It is located near the junction of the Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana railroads. The city of Brent was once known as "Brentville" and was named after surveyor Brent H. Armstrong. It was incorporated as a town in 1913 and is located along the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad. It has a post office with a ZIP code of 7053. The county seat of Brent is Brent, and the town has a total population of 2,100. The village is located just northeast of Demopolis in Hale County and eventually dissipating at Cheaha Mountain in Clay County. It also received significant damage as well as locations in nearby counties. Brent has been hit by two EF3 tornadoes, one in 2011 and one in 2012.

Brent has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Brent has an average monthly temperature of °F (°C) of 8.8 degrees Fahrenheit (4.7 degrees Celsius). Brent has 8.8 square miles (22.8 km²) of land, of which 0.039 sq miles (0.1 km²), or 0.34%, is water. Brent is located on the Mississippi River, which flows through the county. The county seat of Brent is Centreville; Brent is on the Tennessee River. The town has a total area of 8.9 square miles, or 22.7 km², with 0.1 square miles of that as land. It has a population of 1,838.
Demographics
As of the 2010 U.S. census, there were 4,947 people, 1,178 households, and 788 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 53.5% Black or African American, 45.1% White, 0.0% Asian, 0.5%, 0.6% from two or more races, and 0.4% Hispanic or Latino of any race. Government
Brent is governed via the mayor-council system. The mayor, currently Bobbie White, is elected by the entire city. The city council consists of five members each elected from single member districts. The Alabama Department of Corrections operates the Bibb Correctional Facility in Brent. The United States Postal Service operates the Brent Post Office. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a training facility in the city. Brent is home to the Alabama Army National Guard and the Alabama Air National Guard. The Brent Police Department is based in the town of Brent, Alabama. It is located on the Alabama-Mississippi state line and is part of the Mobile-Brent County Sheriff's Office. Brent has a population of about 2,000. It has one of the highest crime rates in the state, with more than 30 arrests per 100,000 residents. It also has the highest murder rate in the country, with 15 per cent of its residents convicted in the last three years. It was the site of the deadliest school shooting in the United States, which took place in 2007 and 2008. The school district has a budget of more than $1.5 million, with the majority of its students living in Brent and surrounding areas. Brent also has a high school, which has about 1,000 students, and an adult high school that has around 1,200 students. The town has a post office, which is run by the U.N. Postal Service. The state's largest employer is the Alabama State Department of Education.
