Clovis

Clovis is a city in Fresno County, California, United States. It is located 6.5 miles (10.5 km) northeast of downtown Fresno, at an elevation of 361 feet (110 m) Clovis began as a freight stop along the San Joaquin Valley Railroad. It was incorporated as a city on February 12, 1912, and has a long history as a western town. The city's population was 120,124 at the 2010 census. It has been home to the Fresno Unified School District since the 1970s. The town is located on the banks of the SanJoaquin River, just 26 miles (42 km) from its point of origin in Fresno. The railroad was completed as far as the town of Hamptonville (now Friant) in 1891. The first year of operation of the railroad coincided with the beginnings of a deep national economic decline. The SJVRR was unable to generate sufficient revenues to pay its debt, was leased to the Southern Pacific Railroad and subsequently bought by SPRR in 1893. The railway was later purchased by the Southern California Railway in 1998. The Cloviks are a suburb of Fresno. They are a part of the Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the cities of Fresno, Stockton, and Bakersfield. The City of Fresno is a member of the California League of Cities and the California State League of American Indians, which is a non-profit organization based in Stockton. The California League has a chapter in Fresno called the California City Council.

History

The city of Clovis began as a freight stop along the San Joaquin Valley Railroad. The town has a long history as a western town known for its slogan, "Clovis A Way of Life". Since 1914, the Clovo Rodeo has been held on the last weekend in April every year. The city was incorporated as a city in February 1912 and the first post office opened in 1895. It is located on the banks of the SanJoaquin River, just 26 miles (42 km) from its point of origin in Fresno. The railroad was completed as far as the town of Hamptonville (now Friant) in 1894. The lumber mill and yard had its own network of rails to move lumber around the yard and to connect with the SJVRR just south ofclovis station. The mill burned in 1914 and was not rebuilt until after the Second World War, when the railroad was taken over by the Southern Pacific Railroad (SPR) The town is now home to the Clova Rodeos and Clark Intermediate School, which was founded in the 1950s and now sits on the site of the former lumber mill. Clova is a U.S. Air Force base, with a base camp in the nearby town of Bakersfield, California. The airport serves as a hub for air traffic to and from the San Francisco Bay Area and the Los Angeles area. It was built in the 1960s and has a runway that can carry up to 100,000 passengers.

Geography

Clovis is situated midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, bordering Fresno. Lying at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, Clovis has been known as "Gateway to the Sierras" since its incorporation in 1912. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.28 square miles (60.29 km²), all of it land. The elevation of the city is approximately 355 feet (108 m) above mean sea datum. The area has active and potentially active seismic fault zones. Part of the area is within the 100-year flood zone, such as some of the areas near the Clovi Towne Center. The groundwater flow in Clov is generally to the southwest. The city is located in the San Joaquin Valley, which includes Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. It is located on the San Francisco Bay Area's West Coast, between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It has a population of around 2,000. It was founded in 1912, and is located at the head of the San Luis Valley, one of the most agriculturally rich areas in the U.S. The town has a history of being known as the "City of the Mountain" for its proximity to Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks, as well as other national parks. It also has a reputation for being a hotbed of illegal activity, with a number of murders and kidnappings in recent years.

At the 2010 census Clovis had a population of 95,631. The racial makeup of the city was 67,758 (70.9%) White, 2,618 (2.7%) African American, 1,320 (1.4%) Native American, 10,233 (10.7) Asian, 218 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 8,857 (9.3%) from other races, and 4,627 (4.8%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24,514 persons (25.6%). There were 35,306 housing units at an average density of 1,516.7 per square mile (585.6/km²),of which 33,419 were occupied, 20,804 by the owners and 12,615 by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.3%; the rental vacancy rates was 6.4%. 60,767 people (63.5% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 34,476 people (36.1%) lived in rental housing units. The median income for a household in the city is $42,283, and the median family income is $59,630. The city has a population density of 4,108.2 inhabitants per squaremile (1,586.2/km 2). The city's population is 75.8% White, 1.9% Black or African American, 1.5%. Native American, 6.5. Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islanders, 9.5%, 4.6% from other Races.

Economy

The Sierra Vista Mall is a 78-acre (32 ha) enclosed regional shopping center anchored by Target, Kohl's, and MB2 Indoor Raceway. Public transportation within the city is provided by Clovis Transit. Some areas also are served by Fresno Area Express, providing connections to Fresno. The city's 2020 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the city's top employers in the city are: Target, Sierra Vista Cinemas 16, and Cityscape. It is located in the Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Fresno, Fresno County, and parts of Fresno, Kingsville, Fresno, and Kingsville. It was named one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. by CNN.com in 2010. It has a population of 4,856. It had a population growth rate of 2.7% in the year ending June 2013. It recorded a population increase of 1.2% from the year before. It reported a population decline of 0.8% from 2013 to 2014, the lowest rate in the state. It suffered a population decrease of 1% from 2012 to 2014. It experienced a population loss of 2% from 2011 to 2013, the highest rate in Fresno since 2002. It lost 1.3% of its population in the same period. The number of people living in poverty has increased from 2.1% to 2.4%. It has the highest unemployment rate among the cities in Fresno County. It also has the lowest unemployment rate of the cities.

Education

The Clovis Unified School District is the largest school district in Fresno County, California. The school district has more than 100 schools. The district also has a number of colleges and public libraries. The town is home to the Fresno County Public Library and the Fresno City College of San Joaquin College of Law and the California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine. The city is also home to a high school, a middle school, and a community college. The community college has a college of law, and the community college offers a pharmacy program. The high school district also operates a public high school and a public library. It is one of the largest schools in the state, with more than 200 students in grades 7-12 and more than 300 in grades 5-12. It also has several middle schools, middle and high schools, as well as a public elementary and middle high school. It was founded in the 1950s by a group of parents who moved their children to the town from Modesto, California, to escape the poverty of the city's surrounding areas. It has since grown to become one of Fresno County's largest school districts, with nearly 1,000 students in the school district. It's also the largest community college, with about 100 students in its community. The college has two colleges, one in law enforcement and one in pharmacy, and two in health care, with a total enrollment of more than 1,200 students. The area also has two public libraries, one for high school students and one for middle school students.
