Makawao is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaii, United States. Located on the northwest slope of Haleakala on East Maui, the community is known for being the hub of the "Upcountry", a part of the island dominated by mostly agriculture and ranch land. At the 2000 census, there were 6,327 people, 2,151 households, and 1,565 families in the CDP. The CDP has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.0 km²), all of it land. It is located at 20°5113N 156°191W (20.853657, -156.316951). The population was 7,297 at the 2020 census, and is expected to rise to 7,300 by the end of the decade. The median household income was $46,681 and the median family income was $50,145. About 7.4% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18. The per capita income for theCDP was $18,776. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.34. The age distribution was 29.6%. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there are 99.5 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there was 93.2 males. The population density was 1,353.8 inhabitants per square mile.

Makawao has a population of 1,816. The CDP is located in the eastern part of the island of Honshu, in the province of Baja California. It is the only CDP in the state to be entirely made up of non-Hispanic white residents. The town's population was 1,788 at the 2010 Census. It has a latitude of 20.5113 N and a longitude of 156.191W. It was founded in 1881. The city's ZIP code is 6054. It had a population in the year of its founding, and it has a current population of 2,716. It lies in the Baja Peninsula, which is the most populous region of the state, with a total population of 3,814.
