Charles City is a city in and the county seat of Floyd County, Iowa. The population was 7,396 at the time of the 2020 census, a decrease of 5.3%, from 7,812 in 2000. Charles City is known for the role it played in the history of the American tractor. It is the location of the last lynching in Iowa, that of James Cullen in 1907. U.S. Routes 18 and 218, Iowa Highway 14, and the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railroads serve the city. The city is in a location subject to tornadoes, and has been severely damaged by them many times in its history. On June 9, 2008, record flooding caused major damage in the town. The Dr. Alvin L. Miller House, a Usonian house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in Charles City and is open to the public for tours. The town's historic suspension bridge, which crossed over the Cedar River, collapsed. Numerous homes around the city were also destroyed. In the summer of 1858 (July 21), a "Terrific Tornado" was recorded inside the village of St. Charles. There were 16 deaths, possibly while still in the village. The property value destroyed was into the thousands of dollars (beyond 1818 dollars), and the loss of crops was in the thousands. On May 15, 1968, a devastating F5 tornado ripped through the region. It resulted in 13 dead, hundreds injured, and hundreds of property losses.
History

The Hart-Parr company also made some of the first washing machines. The last lynching in Iowa, that of James Cullen in 1907, took place in Charles City. The town is in a location subject to tornadoes, and has been severely damaged by them many times in its history. In the summer of 1858 (possibly July 21), while still known as the village of St. Charles, a "Terrific Tornado" was recorded. There were 16 deaths, 13 inside the village. The property value of buildings destroyed was into the thousands of dollars (1858 dollars), and the loss of crops was said to be "beyond competition", according to the newspaper account. On June 9, 2008, record flooding caused major damage in the town. The city's historic suspension bridge, which crossed over the Cedar River, collapsed. Numerous homes around the city were also destroyed. On May 15, 1968, a devastating tornado ripped through the town, resulting in 13, dead, hundreds injured, and was one of the largest twisters ever recorded in the state, destroying much of the downtown area. Damage estimates of more than $20 million were more than 1,250 homes and 256 businesses and 1, 250 homes and businesses destroyed much of downtown. The path of the tornado ran through southeast part of the business district of the city, missing the city.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.31 square miles (16.34 km²) of which 6.22 square miles is land and 0.09 sq miles (0.23 km² is water. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to be named after a Confederate general. It has a population of 2,856. The town's population was 3,854 in the 2010 Census. It was the first city in Mississippi to be called "The City of the River" by the United States Census Bureau. It also has the only town in Mississippi that was named "The River" in the 18th century. The river is a tributary of the Mississippi, which flows through the city's central area. It runs through a valley known as the Red River. The Red River and its tributaries run through the central part of the town, which is also known as "The Red River Valley" and "The Little Red River" The city's name comes from the word "Red River" which means "red" or "Red" and means "river". Education
Charles City is served by the Charles City Community School District. The Charles City Public Library hosts the Mooney Art Collection, a set of original art prints by Rembrandt, Dali, Picasso, and Goya. There were two former institutions called Charles City College, the first a Methodist college that was absorbed into Morningside College in the 1910s, and the second a short lived branch of Parsons College. Charles City High School is the only high school in the district. The city is home to Charles City Middle School and Charles City Elementary School. The town is also home to the University of Charles City, which was once known as Charles City Junior College. It was a short-lived branch of the now-defunct Parsons College from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. It is located on the banks of the Charles River, which runs through the center of the city. It has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the town. It also has a small airport, which serves as a hub for the city's business community. The community has a reputation for being a good place to live and raise a family, with many residents raising their children in the local area. The school district has one of the lowest crime rates in the state, with only one murder rate in the city in the last five years.
