Shepherdsville

Shepherdsville is a home rule-class city on the Salt River in Bullitt County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is the seat of its county, located just south of Louisville. American Indians have been shown to have lived in the area for at least 15,000 years. The vicinity was originally known by European Americans as "Bullitt's Lick" for the salt licks discovered by surveyor Capt. Thomas Bullitt in 1773. In 1836, a mineral water spa called Paroquet Springs opened. It was a trading center for the county, and important for law and justice related to the county seat. In the mid-1850s, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad's mainline was constructed nearby. Construction of the Kentucky Turnpike (now Interstate 65) in the 1950s stimulated residential development in the suburbs, as people who worked in Louisville could commute more easily to work. The population was 14,201 during the 2020 U.S. Census. The city has a total area of 10.0 square miles (25.8 km²), of which 9.7 sq miles (25.1 km²) is land and 0.31sq miles (0.8km²), or 3.00%, is water. In 2000, there were 8,334 people, 3,177 households, and 2,363 families residing in the city. There were 3,402 housing units at an average density of 323.0 per square mile (124.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.24% White, 0.92% African American,0.35% Native American, 0.37% Asian,  0.02% Pacific Islander,  and 0.12% from other races.

History

Shepherdsville is the primary city name, but also Fox Chase, Hebron Estates, Hebron Ests, Hunters Hlw, Hunters Hollow, Pioneer Village, Pioneer Vlg, Shepherdsvlle are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Shepherdsville, Kentucky. Shepherdsville was named for the salt licks discovered by surveyor Thomas Bullitt in 1773. The city received its charter in 1793 and was designated as the county seat when Bullitt County was formed in 1796. In 1836, a mineral water spa called Paroquet Springs opened. In the mid-1850s, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad's mainline was constructed nearby. In 1917, a two-train collision that was the deadliest train wreck in Kentucky history killed about 50 people in Shepherd'sville and other outlying areas. It was a trading center for the county, and important for law and justice related to the county. The Kentucky Turnpike (now Interstate 65) in the 1950s stimulated residential development in the suburbs, as people who worked in Louisville could commute more easily to work. The first post office opened in 1806, and the city was named after the town's first postmaster, Adam Shepherd, who had purchased 900 acres (360 ha) of land in the area in the 17th century. During the Civil War, the railroad bridge over the Salt River was a potential target for sabotage and was guarded by Union troops. It burned to the ground in 1879 shortly after the formal end of Reconstruction. Water from the springs continued to be bottled and sold until 1915, and was used to treat a variety of maladies in the community. The town's economy was based on agriculture, and many people moved to the area to have new houses.

Geography

Shepherdsville is located on the banks of the Salt River. Downtown Louisville is 20 miles to the north via Interstate 65. Elizabethtown is 26 miles (42 km) to the south. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, ShepherDSville has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The town has a total area of 10.0 square miles (25.8 km²), of which 9.7 square miles is land and 0.31 sq miles (0.8 sq km²) is water. The city has a population of 2,816. The population of Shepherdsvile in 2010 was 2,715. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the town's population to be 2,917. The area has a climate of humid subtroropical, with an average temperature of °C (°F) in the summer and °F (°C) in winter. The average annual rainfall in the town is 1.8 inches (3.5 m) and the average yearly temperature is 3.0 inches (8.7 m), or 0.8 in summer and 0.7 inches (1.0 in winter. It has an average daily rainfall of 1.9 inches (4.2 km) and an average annual temperature of 0.9 in the summer.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,334 people, 3,177 households, and 2,363 families residing in Shepherdsville. The racial makeup of the city was 97.24% White, 0.92% African American, 0.35% Native American,0.37% Asian, 0,02% Pacific Islander, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.74% of the population. According to realtor website Zillow, the average price of a home as of May 31, 2022 is $219,327. The median income for a household in the city is $36,103, and the median family income is $40,878. About 13.7% of families and 15.2% of people were below the poverty line, including 25. 2% of those under age 18 and 8.6% ofThose age 65 or over. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size was 2.96. The city has a population density of 791.3 inhabitants per square mile (305.5/km²). There were 3,402 housing units at an average density of 323.0 per squaremile (124.7/ km²) The city's median age is 29 years, with 28.9% under the age of 18. For every 100 females, there are 94.9 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there is 90.8 males.

Education

Shepherdsville has a public library, a branch of the Bullitt County Public Library. Different sections of the city are zoned to one of the county's three regular public high schools: Bullitt Central High School, Bullitt East High School and Bullitt Lick High School. The city also houses Riverview High School, the county district's alternative high school for at-risk students. Some northern areas are zoning to North Bullitt High School which is located in the city of Hebron Estates. The town has a post office with a ZIP code of 7053. The post office has a number of other locations, including: 7054, 7055, 7063, 7074, and 7075. The community has a population of about 3,000 people. The population of the town is about 2,500 people, with the majority of the population living in the northern part of the community. The area has a high school population of around 1,500. The school district has a total enrollment of about 4,000 students, with about 1,000 of those students in the north and the rest in the south. The county district has three regular high schools and two alternative high schools. The high school district also has an alternative school, which is called Riverview. The middle schools are located in Mount Washington. The primary schools are in the town's northern and eastern areas. The public library has a branch in Shepherdsvillle, as well as an annex in Hebron.
