West Monroe is a city in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, United States. Its population was 13,065 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The current mayor is Staci Albritton Mitchell, who has served since 2018. The city has a total area of 8.0 square miles (20.6 km²) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, West Monroe has a population of 13,103. The two cities are often referred to as the Twin Cities of northeast Louisiana. The National Guard calls West Monroe "a vibrant, growing area...... with a small town atmosphere and many amenities of a larger city [larger]" The city was laid out in 1837 as Byron by John Campbell at the foot of the ferry landing to Monroe, the town floundered and Campbell went bankrupt. The area was bought by Christopher Dabbs, a doctor from Virginia who submitted the plans for Cotton Port in 1854; it was officially recognized in 1859. It too languished until the arrival of the Vicksburg, Shreveport and Pacific Railway and the construction of the bridge over the Ouachitas River. The consultants for Duck Dynasty declared West Monroe and the general area "a clean, growing, friendly area [with a] small atmosphere...... many amenities and features of alarger city... [22nd] National Guard" said the city is "one of the best places to live in the United States".

History

Originally laid out in 1837 as Byron by John Campbell, the town floundered and Campbell went bankrupt. The area was bought by Christopher Dabbs, a doctor from Virginia who submitted the plans for Cotton Port in 1854. It too languished until the arrival of the Vicksburg, Shreveport and Pacific Railway and the construction of the bridge over the Ouachita River. Cotton Port boomed as a river port and rail depot. In 1859, Cotton Port was officially recognized as a city by the state of Louisiana. It was named after Cotton Port, Louisiana, where the town of Cotton Port is located. The town is now home to the Cotton Port Museum, which was established in 1859. The museum is located in Cotton Port and is open to the public. It is also home to a museum of African-American history and culture, which opened in 1858. The Cotton Port museum is on the banks of the Ouachtita River, near the town's downtown area. It has a collection of artifacts from the 1800s and early 1900s, including a 19th-century blacksmith shop and a blacksmith's shop. It also has a small museum of American history, which dates back to the early 1800s. It's on the outskirts of the city of Monroe, Louisiana and was once known as the "Town of the Blacksmiths" and "The Blacksmith's Town of Monroe" The town was named for the blacksmith, who came to the area in the 17th century to build a ferry landing.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.0 square miles (20.6 km²) West Monroe is a separate municipality from Monroe. The city is located on the Ouachita River, which flows through the center of the city. It is located at an elevation of 7.7 square miles (20.0 km²), with 0.2 square mile (0.6 km²) of land and 3.14 square miles (8.0 sq mi) of water. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population to be 8,000. The area has a population density of 7,700 people per square mile. It has a water surface of 0.6 square miles, or 0.3 square mile (1.2  km²). The city has an area of  7.7 square miles (20.0km²), of which  0.2 sq miles (1 meter) is land and 0.4 square mile (0.5 km3) is water. West Monroe was founded in 1858. It was named after the town of West Monroe, Louisiana, which was once part of the state. The town's name is derived from the French word "Monroe" which means "home" or "place" in French. The word "monroe" means "a place" and means "to be a place".

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 13,103 people, 5,616 households, and 2,636 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 61.9% White, 33.6% African American, 0.4% Native American,0.8% Asian and 0.05% Pacific Islander. The city's median income was $27,522, and the median income for a family was $35,348. The per capita income for the city is $16,803. About 15.6%. of families and 21.6. of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.1%. of those under age 18 and 13.1% of those age 65 or over. In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.8%. under the age of 18, 10.9%. from 18 to 24, 26.9. from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36.5 years. For every 100 females, there are 83.5 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there is 79.6 males. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size is 2.90. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (662.7/km²). In the 2000 census, the city had a population of 13,250.

Government

West Monroe, Louisiana, is home to the popular A&E reality TV series "Duck Dynasty" The show is set in West Monroe. West Monroe is a suburb of New York City.
