Alger is an unincorporated community at 44°0732N 84°0716W, situated on exit 202 off I-75 at the junction with M-33. Alger was established in 1883 as a railway junction. Forest Lake is a small community around the reservoir named Forest Lake on the east-central part of the township. The township has a total area of 32.1 square miles (83.1 km²), of which 31.5 square miles. (81.6 km²) is land and 0.58 square miles, or 1.5 km², is water. It is located a few miles from the Skidway and Prescott area of Michigan. The population grew 5% to 1,184 in 2010, and the median income for a household in the township was $40,724. In the township the population was spread out, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 23. 1% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. History

Alger, who later became the 20th governor of Michigan, and then the U.S. Secretary of War.
