Alger is an unincorporated community at 44°0732N 84°0716W, situated on exit 202 off I-75 at the junction with M-33. Alger was established in 1883 as a railway junction. Forest Lake is a small community around the reservoir named Forest Lake on the east-central part of the township. The township has a total area of 32.1 square miles (83.1 km²), of which 31.5 square miles. (81.6 km²) is land and 0.58 square miles, or 1.5 km², is water. It is located a few miles from the Skidway and Prescott area of Michigan. The population grew 5% to 1,184 in 2010, and the median income for a household in the township was $40,724. In the township the population was spread out, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 23. 1% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males. The per capita income for the township for the 2010 census was $16,05. About 5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.9% of those under age 65 or over. The area of Alger was created from the formation of a railroad junction along the Michigan Central Railroad in 1882 to 1883.

History

In 1882 to 1883, the area of Alger was created from the formation of a railroad junction along the Michigan Central Railroad. The railroads were thriving mainly due to Michigan's lumbering boom at the time, and Alger grew to be a popular settlement with many mills, restaurants, and saloons. In 1896 the railroad from Prescott ceased operations, and into the early 1900s (decade) as the timber reached depletion, the logging railroads disappeared along with businesses. Today, Alger has slowly downsized to a small community of approximately 1,000 people. It was named after Russell A. Alger, who later became the 20th governor of Michigan, and then the U.S. Secretary of War. The town of Alger is now home to the University of Michigan's Allegany County Campus, which was founded in 1883. The community of Alger has a population of about 1,200. The township is located in the Upper Peninsula of New York state. It is the largest township in New York County, with a population of 1,856. The town's population was 1,788 at the 2010 census. The population of the township is 1,938 at the 2010 census, and 1,632 at the 2012  Census bureau  estimates. It has an area of 31.1square miles, or 83.1km², with 31.7 square miles, (81km²) as its land area. It also has a water area of 1.5sq miles, or 1.7 km², making it the largest town in the township. The Township's population is 2,738, or 8.7% of the total population of New Jersey. It's the largest county township in the state, with the population of 4,836 at the 2011  Census. It was the largest municipality in New Jersey in the early 1900s, when the population was 2,838. It became the largest city in the county in the mid-20th century, when it was the seat of the New Jersey State Legislature.

The racial makeup of the township was 97.86% White, 0.62% Native American,0.27% Asian, and 1.25% from two or more races. In 2010, the population grew 5.6% to 1,184 people, 514 households and 354 residing families. The median income for a household in the Township was $39,318. In the township the population was spread out, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 23. 1% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was2.75. The township is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey and New Jersey by the Susquehanna River. It is located near the junction of the New York and Pennsylvania Turnpikes. It has a population of about 1,200 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The town's ZIP code is 6054, and its area code is 7054. It was the site of the U.N. World War II training camp for American troops, which is now a part of the United States Army. It also is home to the New Hampshire State Police, which was founded in 1945.

Cole Canoe Base is a nearby camp for the Boy Scouts of America. It is located on East Greenwood Road, a few miles from the Skidway Lake and Prescott area.
