Jersey City is the second-most populous city in the U.S. state of New Jersey, after Newark. It is the county seat of Hudson County and the county's largest city. The city's population as of the 2020 United States census was 292,449. Redevelopment of the Jersey City waterfront has made the city one of the largest centers of banking and finance in the United States. The contemporary flag of the city is a variation on the Prince's Flag from the Netherlands. The stripes are blue, white and yellow, with the center of the flag showing the city seal, depicting Hudson's ship, the Half Moon, and other modern vessels. The oldest surviving houses in Jersey City are of Dutch origin including the Newkirk House (1690), the Van Vorst Farm (1740), and the Van Wagenen House (19th century). In 1804, a private citizen, Alexander Hamilton, helped to create the greater New York City area. He helped to lay the groundwork for modern Jersey City through private development through the New Jersey City Company. The company was purchased by the Federalists, who were predominantly Federalists who had been swept out of power in 1800 by Thomas Jefferson and other Democratic-Republicans. In 1801, the company purchased the titles of Paulus Hook, former mayor of New York, and two cousins, Richard Varick and Jacob Varick, from a prominent old Dutch family. The titles were purchased by Anthony Dey, who was a former New York mayor, and his cousins Richard and Jacob.

History

In 1609, Henry Hudson anchored his small vessel Halve Maen (English: Half Moon) at Sandy Hook, Harsimus Cove and Weehawken Cove, and elsewhere along what was later named the North River. The contemporary flag of the city is a variation on the Prince's Flag from the Netherlands. The oldest surviving houses in Jersey City are of Dutch origin including the Newkirk House (1690), the Van Vorst Farmhouse (1740), and the Van Wagenen House (1740) During Kieft's War, approximately eighty Lenapes were killed by the Dutch in a massacre at Pavonia on the night of February 25, 1643. The village of Bergen was established on what is now Bergen Square in 1660 and officially chartered on September 5, 1661, as the state's first local civil government. In 1804, Alexander Hamilton, now a private citizen, was focused on increasing manufacturing in the greater New York City area. To that end, he helped to create the Associates of the Jersey Company which would lay the groundwork for modern Jersey City through private development. The consortium behind the company were predominantly Federalists who, like Hamilton, had been swept out of power in the election of 1800 by Thomas Jefferson and other Democratic-Republicans. They laid out the city squares and streets that still characterize the city, giving them names such as Grove, Varick, Wayne, and Montgomery. Despite Hamilton's untimely death, the Association carried on until 1834, when New York ceded control of Jersey City to New Jersey.
