Irwin is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Pittsburgh. In 1900, the population numbered 2,452; it increased to 2,886 in 1910. The population was 3,973 at the 2010 census. Some of the most extensive bituminous coal deposits in the State are located here. In the past, iron foundries, flour mills, car shops, facing and planing mills, and mirror factories provided employment to the residents. In 2000, there were 4,366 people, 2,084 households, and 1,131 families residing in the borough. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), all of it land. The racial makeup of the borough was 96.61% White, 1.01% African American, 0.09% Native American, 1.19% Asian, 037% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. The median income for a household in the Borough was $32,758. The per capita income was $18,722. About 6.6% of families and 8.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.4% of those under age 18 and 5.6%) of those age 65 or over.Brush Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. History

Irwin was the original western terminus of the Pennsylvania Turnpike when it opened in October 1940. The town was named for John Irwin, the original owner of the town site. Brush Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It is located on the banks of the Susquehannock River, which flows into the Delaware River. It was named after Irwin, who owned the land at the time of the turnpike's opening. It has a population of about 2,000 people. The area was once known as the "Town of Irwin" and was the site of the first settlement in the 19th century. The current town was founded in the early 20th century, and was named in honor of Irwin, a local businessman. It now lies on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which was built in the 1930s and 1940s, and is known for its scenic views. It also has a number of historic buildings, including the Irwin House, which dates back to the 18th century and was built by Irwin himself. The Town of Irwin was named for Irwin, an early settler of the area, and the town was once called "The Town of Irwin," after the town's first owner, John Irwin. The Town of Irwin is now known as "Brush Hill" and is located near the Susquehanna River, which runs through the center of the city.
