Ellendale is the capital city of Dickey County, North Dakota. The population was 1,125 at the 2020 census. Ellendale is located at 46°011N 98°3123W (46.002987, 98.523112). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.52 square miles (3.94 km²) The city is named for the wife of S. S. Merrill, the founder of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. It is the home of Trinity Bible College, located on the former campus of the North Dakota State Normal and Industrial School and the Ellendale Opera House currently under renovation. The city was established as county seat of the newly formed Dickey county in 1882. It was named for S.S. Merrill's wife, who was the first female mayor of Ellendale in the 19th century. The town is located in the state of North Dakota, and is located near the state capital of Bismarck. It has a population of 1,394, according to the 2010 census. History

Ellendale was established as county seat of the newly formed Dickey County in 1882. That same year saw the arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad into the area. Ellendale is named for the wife of S. S. Merrill, who was the county seat at the time of the county's formation. It is located on the banks of the Wisconsin River, near the city of Dickey, and the town of Ellendale, on the Illinois River. The county seat is located at the junction of the Illinois, Wisconsin and Illinois Turnpike, about two miles north of the Dickey River. It has a population of about 2,000 people, about half of whom live in Ellendale. The town is home to a public library, a post office, a school, a hospital, and a postmaster's office.
