Marana is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States, located northwest of Tucson, with a small portion in Pinal County. According to the 2010 census, the population of the town is 34,961. From 1990 to 2000, Marana was the fourth fastest-growing place among all cities and towns of any size in Arizona.Archaeologists have found evidence of about 4,200 years of continuous human settlement in the vicinity of Marana and the middle Santa Cruz Valley. The oldest tobacco pipes in the world were found here. Spanish colonists began to inhabit this area in the 17th and 18th centuries. The area became part of the independent Mexican Empire established in 1821 (soon replaced by the Republic of Mexico) and later the United States acquired this territory. In 1920, the longtime widower William Anway married Orpha Ralston, who had been a member of the local Postvale Co-operative Women's Club. This group lobbied to have the local post office renamed from Marana to Postvale. It has produced alfower, barley, cotton, and wheat crops, but not until after World War I has Marana become an agricultural center. The town was also named Marana, after Marana Postvale, which was also a post office in the time of the First World War. It is located on the Santa Cruz floodplain near the Point of the Mountain at the northern end of the Tucson Mountains. In 1775, Juan Bautista de Anza, Captain of the Presidio of Tubac, led an expedition north along theSanta Cruz River to find the city of San Francisco. A 15-mile (24 km) segment of the route that the expedition took through Marana is designated aspart of the Juan Bautsa de Anaza National Historic Trail.
History
Archaeologists have found evidence of about 4,200 years of continuous human settlement in the vicinity of Marana. The oldest tobacco pipes in the world were found here. Spanish colonists began to inhabit this area in the 17th and 18th centuries. The area became part of the independent Mexican Empire established in 1821 (soon replaced by the Republic of Mexico). It became the largest training center in the Titan-training world in the post-World War I years, some 10,000 people a year. During World War II, the U.S. Army built facilities here to support the military effort in the war. The town was named after the local post office, the Postvale Co-operative Women's Club, which was later renamed the Marana Airfield (245). It was also the birthplace of the Air Force pilot training center, the Titan Airfield, which became the world's largest pilot training centre in the postwar years in the 1950s and 1960s. It is also the site of the oldest cemetery in the American Southwest and the oldest-known canals in North America, dating back 2,500 years to the Hohokam culture. It was the home of Charles B. Anway, the first member of the Anway family in the Tucson area; he came because the dry mountain air was thought to be beneficial for people suffering from tuberculosis. The city is now home to the University of Arizona, which has a campus that was founded in 1858. It also hosts the National Museum of the American West, which is the only museum of its kind in the United States.
