Animas is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in west-central Hidalgo County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 237. It lies at the intersection of State Roads 9 and 338, at an elevation of 4,406 feet (1,343 m) It is located just west of the Continental Divide and is approximately 30 miles (48 km) south of Lordsburg, the nearest significant population center. Smaller communities closer to Animas include Cotton City, Playas, and Rodeo. Animas lies in a region rich in Native American history. Twenty-one different archeological sites in the Animas area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a cool semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk) with hot summers and mild winters. The Animas CDP has an area of 15.7 square miles (40.6 km²), all land. It was founded circa 1753 by the Spanish, and became part of the newly independent country of Mexico in 1821. It is in the area sold to the United States with the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, and is located in the Peloncillo Mountains on the west and the Pyramid Mountains and Animas mountains on the east. The post office opened in 1909, with the ZIP code of 88020, and the community has a post office that is still open today.
History
Founded circa 1753 by the Spanish, Animas became part of the newly independent country of Mexico in 1821. It is located in the area sold to the United States with the Gadsden Purchase of 1853. Unlike most of New Mexico, animas was not part of Mexican Cession after the MexicanAmerican War ended. Animas is located on the Gulf of Mexico, which was once a major shipping route for the U.S. East Coast. The Animas River, which runs through Animas, was once the source of the Rio Grande River. The Rio Grande and its tributaries were once a vital water supply for Animas. The river is now a source of drinking water for the Animas region of New Mexico, as well as for the rest of the state of New Mexico. The city of Animas was founded in 1753 and became a Spanish colony in 1754. It was part of Mexico until 1821, when it became an independent country. The town is now part of New New Mexico and is located near the border with Sinaloa and Yucatán state. It has a population of about 2,000. The area was once part of Mexico and was part of the Mexican Cession, which ended in the Mexican American War of 1821 and 1822. It was not part of the Mexican American Cession until 1853, after which it was sold to the United States. The U. S.A. bought Animas for $1.5 million.
