Lovington is a city in and the county seat of Lea County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 11,009 at the 2010 census, up from 9,471 in 2000. U.S. Route 82 passes through the center of town, leading west 64 miles (103 km) to Artesia and northeast 35 miles to Plains, Texas. New Mexico State Road 18 leads southeast from Lovington 21 miles (34km) to Hobbs. State Road 83 leads east 18 miles (29 kilometers) to the Texas border, where Texas State Highway 83 continues east 14 miles (23 km), to Denver City. The city is located at 32°5647N 103°2113W (32.946459, -103.353618). According to the United States Census Bureau, Lovington has a total area of 11.4 square miles (29.5 km²), of which 0.03 sq miles (0.08 km²) is water. It operates Lovington Municipal Schools. It is the area school district for Lovington High School, which was founded in 1872. The school district has a high school, which opened in 1874. It was the first high school in New Mexico to open in 1876. The high school is located in Lovington's central business district. It has a junior high and a senior high, which were established in 1878. It also has a middle school and an elementary school, both of which are located in the city.

Lovington is located slightly north of the center of Lea County at 32°5647N 103°2113W (32.946459, -103.353618) U.S. Route 82 leads west 64 miles (103 km) to Artesia and northeast 35 miles (56km) to Plains, Texas. According to the United States Census Bureau, Lovington has a total area of 11.4 square miles (29.5 km²), of which 0.03 sq miles (0.08 km²) is water. New Mexico State Road 18 leads southeast from Lovington 21 miles (34 km), to Hobbs, the largest city in Lea county. State Road 83 leads east 18 miles (29 km) to the Texas border, where Texas State Highway 83 continues east 14 miles (23 km)  to Denver City, Texas, where Lovington is about 20 miles (32 km) from the border. The town of Lovington was founded in the early 1800s by settlers from New Mexico's Pecos County. It was named after the town's founder, William Lovington, who was born in the area in the late 1800s. The city is located on the New Mexico-Texas border and has a population of about 2,000. It is located in the eastern part of the county, near the border with Texas and New Mexico. The nearest city is Albuquerque, which is about 30 miles (50 km) away.
