Vienna is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2010 U.S. census, it had a population of 15,687. As a suburb of Washington, D.C., Vienna is a part of both the Washington metropolitan area and the larger WashingtonBaltimore combined statistical area. The Battle of Vienna, one of the earliest armed clashes of the American Civil War, took place in Vienna in 1861. The First Baptist Church of Vienna was founded in 1867, and the original church structure was built using Union Army barracks lumber obtained through the Freedmen's Bureau. This church building was also the town's first black public school. A permanent black elementary school was built, which was later named for its long-time principal, Louise Archer. Fairfax County Schools were completely desegregated by the Fall of 1965. Vienna is located at 38°54N 77°16W (38.8991, 77.2607), at an elevation of 358 feet (109 meters) It lies in the Piedmont approximately 5.5 miles (8.9 km) southwest of the Potomac River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.4 square miles (11.5 km²), all of it land. History
Vienna is the primary city name, but also Tysons, Tysons Corner are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Vienna, Virginia. Non-native settlement in the region dates to ca. 1740. In 1754, prominent soldier and land owner Colonel Charles Broadwater settled within the town boundaries. On June 17, 1861, a relatively-minor but widely noted military engagement occurred there, the Battle of Vienna. The First Baptist Church of Vienna was founded in 1867, and the original church structure was built using Union Army barracks lumber obtained through the Freedmen's Bureau. This church building was also the town's first black public school. The first white public school was built in 1872. A permanent black elementary school was later built, which was later named for its long-time principal, Louise Archer. Fairfax County Schools were completely desegregated by the Fall of 1965. In the center of town lies the well preserved Freeman House; which, in 1861, was the polling place for the secession vote and was used during the war by both sides as a hospital. The house has been turned into a museum and gift shop. The name of the town was changed in the 1850s, when a doctor, William Hendrick, settled there if the town renamed itself after his hometown, Phelps, New York, which were then known as Vienna. In the early 1900s, the town became the site of the U.S. Army's first African-American college, the University of Virginia. The town is located in Fairfax County, which is home to the Virginia Military Institute and the College of William and Mary.

Vienna is 12 miles (19 km) west of Washington and 2 miles (3.2 km) northeast of Fairfax, the county seat. The town is located on Interstate 66 and is located in Northern Virginia on I-66. Vienna is served by three high schools (Oakton, Madison, and Marshall); two middle schools (Kilmer and Thoreau), and seven elementary schools. Of all the schools Vienna students attend, only four public and one private are actually within the town limits. The music program at James Madison High School includes a marching band, "The Pride of Vienna", and color guard, two symphonic bands, jazz band, orchestra, and chorus. Residents of Vienna who live along the town's border with Great Falls, VA also send graduates into Langley High School via Cooper Middle School.Fairfax County Public Public Library operates the Patrick Henry Public Library in Vienna. The town has one independent school, Green Hedges, accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. Vienna has one Catholic school, Oakcrest School, which was founded in 1976 and moved to its permanent campus in Vienna in 2017, and two Catholic elementary schools: St. Mark Catholic School and Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School. Vienna also has one private school, Cunningham Park Elementary School, and one public school, Marshall Road Elementary School.Vienna has one public library, the Vienna Public Library, which is located in the town of Vienna. It is run by the Fairfax County Public Library and is open to the public on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the weekends from 9am to 5pm, and from 9pm to 11pm, on the weekend.
Transportation
Interstate 66 is the main highway serving Vienna. Access is provided via Exit 62 and Virginia State Route 243. In addition, Virginia state Route 123 runs through downtown Vienna. Vienna is located on the Eastern Seaboard of Virginia. The city is home to the Virginia Museum of Natural History, which was established in 1881. The museum is located in the historic district of Vienna, which dates back to the 17th century. It is located at the center of the city, at the intersection of Interstate 66 and State Route 123, and is known as the "Vienna Museum" It is also known as "The Vienna Museum of Nature and Science" for its collection of historic buildings and artifacts. The Vienna Museum is also the home of the Virginia State Museum, which opened in 1883. It was built in the early 19th century and is located near the city's historic center, at a site that is now part of the National Gallery of Virginia, on the eastern side of the Capitol Building.
