Oak Harbor

Oak Harbor was incorporated on May 14, 1915. The city's growth coincided with two major events: the building of Deception Pass Bridge on July 31, 1935, and the completion of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on September 21, 1942. Oak Harbor has a pleasant Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb) characterized by warm dry summers and cold, though not severe, and damp winters. The Olympic rain shadow means that the region is much drier than most of the Pacific Northwest west of the Cascades. Average retreat rates range from one to eight centimeters per year, and shores in the Puget Sound area erode 10 to 100 times faster than rocky shoreline. The Mukilteo Ferry provides service connecting the southern end of Whid Abbey Island and just north of Seattle, WA. The U.S. Census Bureau says the city has a total area of 9.47 square miles (24.53 km²), of which, 9.42 square miles of land and 0.13 km² of water. The population of Oak Harbor was 22,075 at the 2010 census, with a population density of 2,343.4 inhabitants per square mile (904.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 72.6% White, 4.9% African American, 0.9%. Native American, 10.2% Asian, 1.2%. Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 7.8% from two or more races.

History

Oak Harbor is the primary city name, but also Nas Whidbey, Whidbey Island Naval Air are acceptable city names or spellings, Naval Air Station, Whidbey Nas on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Oak Harbor. The city of Oak Harbor is named for the Garry Oak trees. The city was founded in the late 1800s. The Deception Pass Bridge was built in 1935 to connect Whidbey Island to the rest of the U.S. and the world. It is one of the most scenic bridges in the United States. The bridge is a National Historic Monument and is open to the public. It has over 4,100 acres of open space, which is used for hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which was formed in the early 1900s to protect the area from the encroaching waters of the Columbia River. The first residents of the city were settlers from Norway, who arrived in the mid-1850s. They built homes and businesses on the shores of the island. The town was named after the city's namesake, Oak Harbor, which means "golden" in the local language. The word "harbor" means "place" or "land" in English, and is used to refer to the area where the city is located. The name "Harbor" is also used for the city of Seattle, where it is located, as well as other nearby islands, such as Bainbridge Island, which has its own version of "Harbour" The city's name is derived from the name of a Native American tribe, which lived in the area before the arrival of the Dutch in the 18th century. It means "harbours" and "harbors" in Spanish.

The city has a total area of 9.47 square miles (24.53 km²), of which, 9.42square miles (24.40 km²) is land and 0.05sq miles (0.13sqkm) is water. The area of the city is 0.13 sq miles (1.02sq km) wide. It is located in the Cascade Range, which is located to the north of the Olympic Peninsula, and to the east of the Cascade Mountains. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 1.2 million. The population of Oak Harbor is 1.3 million.

As of the census of 2010, there were 22,075 people, 8,677 households, and 5,789 families living in the city. There were 9,553 housing units at an average density of 1,014.1 per square mile (391.5/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 72.6% White, 4.9% African American, 0.9%. Native American, 10.2% Asian, 1.0% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 7.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.3% of the population. The city's median income was $36,641, and the median income for a family was $41,579. The per capita income for theCity was $16,830. About 8.1% of families and 9.4% of those age 65 or over were below the poverty line. The median age in the City was 29 years. For every 100 females, there are 98.7 males. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09. The population was spread out, with 31.6%. under the age of 18, 11.6. from 18 to 24, 34.4. from 25 to 44, 13.4%. from 45 to 64, and 10.3%. who were 65 years of age or older. The male population was 49.2%. The female population was 50.8%.

As of the 2020 election, Oak Harbor has gotten a majority Republican vote (47.53%), followed by Democratic (46.81%) and the Third Parties (5.66%). The town has a population of about 1,000 people. It is located near the border with the state of New Mexico and the town's largest employer is the Port of Los Angeles.
