Altoona is a city in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,292 at the 2020 census with an estimated population in 2021 of 8,817. The name Altoona was based on Altoona, Pennsylvania, which in turn was named after Allatoona, Georgia. The city was incorporated as a city on April 5, 1887. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.86 square miles (12.59 km²), of which, 4.65 square miles of land is land and 0.21 sq miles (0.54 km²) is water. Altoona is situated near Lake Altoona, a man-made lake, with water provided by the Eau. Claire River. It is located at 44°4815N 91°2632W (44.804110, -91.442183). The city limits generally follow Otter Creek to the south, and Fairfax St. and Bus. 53 provides a general boundary between the two, with County Highway AA generally forms the eastern limits of the city. The median income for a household in the city was $63,556, and the median income. for a family was $75,980. About 8.1% of families and 12.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.0% of those under age 18 and 4.1%. History

The settlement of Altoona began in 1881 when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway selected the site for a new terminal to replace the overcrowded existing terminal in Eau Claire. The name Altoona was based on Altoona, Pennsylvania, which in turn was named after Allatoona, Georgia. Residents began moving into the community in early 1882 and the railroad terminal became operational in May of that year. The city was incorporated as a city on April 5, 1887.Continued growth over the past century has left the two cities adjacent to one another, with Fairfax St. and Bus. 53 providing a general boundary between the two. County Highway AA generally forms the eastern limits of the city. Altoona is bounded on the north by Lake Altoona and the eau Claire River. To the south, the city limits generally follow Otter Creek. The actual border is irregular, with County HighwayAA generally forming the eastern limit of the town. The town is located approximately three miles east of the existing EauClaire terminal. It is located on the banks of the Eau Claire River, which is a tributary of the Wisconsin River. It has a population of about 2,000 people, making it one of the largest towns in the state. The population of Eauclaire is about 1,500. The community is located near the town of Fairfax, Wisconsin, about three miles north of the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

Altoona was named after the town of the same name, which was founded in the 17th century. It was the first city in Wisconsin to have a post office, which opened in 1838. The current post office was established in 1841. It closed in 1852. It reopened again in 1854, when the city was incorporated as a city. It became the city of Altoona in 1855. It had a population 2,716 in 1856. It also had a Post Office, which shut down in 1858. It now has a post station, which it opened again in 1861. It lies on the Eulogie River, which runs through the city. The Eau Claire River flows through Altoona.

Education

Altoona is primarily served by the School District of Altoona, and a small parcel is covered by the Eau Claire Area School District. Altoona High School serves most of the area's students. On November 4, 2014, a referendum passed approving a new energy-efficient elementary school on County Road KB. The school will be located on the former site of the old Altoona Elementary School, which was closed in the 1970s. The new elementary school will have a capacity of about 1,000 students. It will be the first elementary school to be built in the state of Wisconsin in more than 30 years. The district will also be adding a middle school and a high school in the near future. It is expected to be completed by the end of the next school year. The high school is scheduled to open in the spring of 2015. The elementary school is set to open by the summer of 2015, and the high school by the fall of 2016. The area is home to a number of charities, including the Altoona Area Foundation and the Altoon Area Council. The Altoona School District is a non-profit organization that provides services to students and their families. It was founded in the early 1900s. It has a history of more than 50 years, and is based in the town's downtown area. It also serves a small part of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The town's small parcel of land is part of the Town of Waukesha, Wisconsin, which has a population of less than 1,500.
